In 1990, the family moved from Alabama to Maryland.

With the suggestion and assistance of the Turkish Ambassador, Drs. Soyer established a Turkish language school which they named Çekirdek Okul (Seedling School). That school still exists today under the name of Atatürk Okulu. Dr. Ayse Soyer also worked on the boards of the Washington Women’s Turkish Association and ATA-DC. Over the years she hosted a local Turkish folk music group in her home, as well as the ATA DC Book Club Committee.
