Ayse Gologlu Soyer

Biography

Dr. Ayse Gologlu Soyer was born in Istanbul in 1942. Ayse graduated from University of Ankara Medical School in 1965 and married her classmate M. Tanju Soyer. She voluntarily transferred from her residency in neurology from Hacettepe, Ankara to Erzurum Atatürk University, where her spouse also completed his residency (general surgery.)Dr. Ayse Soyer started her fellowship in Electro-diagnostic Neurology at the University of Colorado, Denver while her husband trained in research for liver transplantation at the same institution. The following year, they furthered their studies with the opportunity afforded to them by world renown Dr. Tinsley Harrison (then) Dean of University of Alabama, Birmingham Medical School where Dr. Ayse Soyer then had the opportunity to work in the field of neuromuscular medicine with distinguished Professor Dr. Shin Joong Oh.

In1976, the Soyers moved back to Turkey and were among the founders that helped establish the Samsun Ondokuz Mayis University, after which they returned to the US to resume their professional careers.

Dr. Ayse Soyer brought together the small, vibrant and successful Turkish community in the area to create the first Turkish American Association of Alabama. TAAA strove to create bonds with other Turkish American groups in the South to promote, preserve and perpetuate Turkish culture in the area. Their outreach included connecting medical professionals with one another as well as providing a pathway for those needing to access medical care at UAB. In 1990, the family moved from Alabama to Maryland.

With the suggestion and assistance of the Turkish Ambassador, Drs. Soyer established a Turkish language school which they named Çekirdek Okul (Seedling School). That school still exists today under the name of Atatürk Okulu. Dr. Ayse Soyer also worked on the boards of the Washington Women’s Turkish Association and ATA-DC. Over the years she hosted a local Turkish folk music group in her home, as well as the ATA DC Book Club Committee. During her tenure in state of Maryland Dr. Ayse Soyer also edited the most recent editions of her father’s often cited series of books on the history of the establishment of the modern Republic of Turkey, Cumhuriyet Tarihi which is published by Turkey’s Is Bankasi Kültür Yayinlari.
